Backyard Fire Pit – Enjoy Your Garden in the Evening Too

We live in a fast pace world. Most new products are geared towards producing things faster. Have you stopped to listen to any of the advertisements on the radio and television? If you do you will realize the number of times words like faster, quicker, speedier are used. People want faster internet access, a faster number of copies, faxes that arrive and leave quicker and speedier delivery service. We eat fast food or use the microwave to prepare foods faster at home.

Over the past few years I have noticed a trend where people are trying to slow the fast pace down to a manageable speed. People are trying to use the time they save with faster pace production at work, with their families. In our neighborhood one of the things that families are spending more time doing is sitting around a backyard fire pit. This is a great way to relax and talk. There are many things that are shared over a backyard fire pit that may not get talked about in the same relaxed manner in a different setting. There is something about sitting outdoors and being warmed by a fire and seeing the stars overhead that lends itself to sharing a deeper part of our thoughts and dreams.

A backyard fire pit has a way of drawing others. My husband and I created a backyard fire pit a few years ago. We have enough room in our yard so we simply laid down heat resistive bricks in a four foot square. We did this so if we needed to douse a fire it would not make as big a mess. Also we knew the grass would be gone in that area anyway so we laid down the bricks. We then placed a round fire ring on top of the bricks. We purchased the furring at a local home improvement store. They have become quite popular so there are quite a few patterns and sizes to choose from. There are also ceramic burners and raised fire pits that can be used on decks. The first night that we were sitting in the backyard by the fire pit our next door neighbors came by to see the ring. They sat and visited for a while. A few nights later I was putting wood in the pit to prepare for a fire. Our neighbor yelled across the yards that she had made a pan of bars that they would share if we would share the fire. Having the fire pit has been a relaxing addition to our home. It is nicer to sit outside and process your thoughts and dreams than to sit in front of the television.
